Entomology

Entomology is the study of insects.  This is a huge field of study because insects are undoubtedly the largest group of terrestrial animals in the world.  Most of us are familiar with the most pesky insects, like mosquitoes, houseflies, cockroaches, and ants, but there are so many kinds that scientists aren't even close to naming them all.

Here is an excellent definition of what an insect is and a list of the major groupings of insects, called insect systematics.

Insects are found in almost every environment and they are essential for the function of the ecosystem, since there is a species to eat almost anything organic; substances as diverse as wood, dung, and carrion.  And, of course, some insects eat other insects.
