Half Dome Hike '11

The view Half Dome from the east

10:42 As we come out of the forest onto the granite, we get our first view of the ascent.

Half Dome has a smaller peak just east of the main peak

10:52 Getting closer we can see the path up the subdome on the eastern flank of the mountain with people winding their way between the sparse trees.

A steep ascent up the smaller peak

11:20 The climb up the subdome on the eastern flank is so steep that I'm thinking I'll be happy to get down it on my butt.
There are incredible stone stairs built into switchbacks that are joined by slickrock like this.

The upper Yosemite Valley is a spectacle of granite

11:27 The view of Clouds Rest and the upper Yosemite valley is spectacular.

The cables up to Half Dome are very intimidating

11:49 At the top of the subdome, I'm thinking "...hmmm, I don't think so...."

My favorite quote about this hike is 'Since 1919, relatively few people have fallen and died on the cables.' So, is 'relatively', like only a few people a day, or a few every decade?
